Who are we?

Medhanie Alem Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan is a part of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Diocese of North America. By the grace of God, we were able to establish our own Church in 2013, and moved to our current building in 2020.

What do we believe?

The Orthodox faith stems directly from the Church established by the apostles which was given to them by Jesus Christ. There is no reformer or founder that can be traced to the origins of our faith, and is a very traditional church that has not been modernized throughout time. We are also in full communion with the other Oriental Orthodox Churches of Ethiopia, Syria, India (Malankaran Church), Aremenia, and Egypt (Coptic Church).

The principal pillars of the Orthodox faith are contained in the Orthodox Creed as seen below.

We believe in one God, Father Almighty, creater of heaven and earth and all things visable and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation He came down from Heaven; and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became Man. For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. And on the third day He rose from the dead, in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He is coming again in His glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom shall have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church, And we confess one baptism for the remission of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the coming age. Amen
